Post Nasal Drip Breath Problems And What To Do About It

You don’t hear a lot about post nasal drip breath problems, as most are likely to attribute their bad breath to more common causes, such as the buildup of bacteria in their mouths.  However, a problem such as post nasal drip can be very frustrating, as it is harder to treat than a simple case of bacteria buildup on someone’s tongue!  Instead of telling someone to brush their teeth and tongue more often, or drink more water, there are a whole different set of strategies and explanations involved with post nasal drip.

What is post nasal drip?

It is when there is a regular flow of mucus coming from the nasal area that leaks down to the throat area.  The issue here is that the mucus gives bacteria in the throat and mouth the nutrients that they need to survive, which only exaggerates the issue of bad breath for many people.  Even worse, this problem can be chronic and very difficult to treat, at least in comparison to other reasons for foul smelling breath.

Most of the anaerobic bacteria that cause nasty breath live on the back of the tongue, so the mucus that drips from your nasal passages is quite accessible for the little buggers.  Even worse, if you have never had your tonsils removed, debris can collect there and also help bacteria to thrive even further!  Post nasal drip only increases this problem, as well.

There are a number of ways to attack this kind of problem.  First of all, getting your tonsils removed can help, as can taking steps to keep your mouth (especially your tongue, if you have post nasal drip) clean.  You can do this by brushing after all meals, as well as before and after you sleep.  However, if you find that your problem is more serious and hard to improve upon, you may need to see a doctor or specialist.

Post nasal drip breath problems may not get all of the attention that traditional bad breath causes get, but they can present their own unique set of challenges, to be sure.  The only way to help yourself is to make the effort to learn quality strategies that may be available, as well as consulting with experts who can help.  Then, you will be likely to see drastic improvements with regards to the smell of your breath.
